ASSOCIATION FRIENDS OF THE ALPINE GUIDES

logoAmicidelleGuide

The idea of establishing the Friends of the Guides was born in the late 50’s with the aim of facilitating the Alpine Guides in carrying out their activities side by side with a group of friends and fans who, considering very valid and essential their work, made themselves available for any form of aid, collaborating for the improvement of the success of projects and initiatives, and also stimulating other projects deemed valid and possible.
Promoters of this initiative were the mayor of Alagna, Cavalier John Clare, the Commender Carlo Restelli (representing vacationers), Guido Spindles (representing the Italian Alpine Club – Section of Varallo) and Ovid Raiteri (on behalf of the Cai Mountain Rescue).
The association Friends of the Guides, was finally founded in 1959, is an association of presidential type, without the Council and Board members, supported by an annual fee paid by the shareholders used for the support of the Guides.
In its first year of operation there were 65 members, in 2004 the members were already 136.
The fruitful collaboration which has always characterized the relations between the two associations made it possible to implement a number of initiatives such as: the construction of various rock climbing gym (at Pisse and Alagna); the participation of the guides in many European and non-European climbs; the creation, in 1985, of the ceremonial uniform signed Lanerie Agnona; the organization of the annual feast of the Guides, the renewal of Balmenhorn hut dedicated to the memory of Alagna Chief Guide Felice Giordano; the design and organization of the conference held in Alagna between the groups of guides of Valsesia and Val d’Aosta in order to recall the many professional exchanges and experiences that occurred in the past and discuss the future, hopefully full with good prospects, thanks also to the new cableway connection between Alagna, Gressoney and Champoluc.
